LbNA offline

From: John Chapman (john@johnsblog.com) | Date: 2006-08-04 12:08:35 UTC-04:00
The Letterboxing North America site will be offline until we can move to a new hosting service. Unfortunately, the low cost web hosting that we've been using can't accept the increasing load that we're putting on the shared server as letterboxing has grown over the years. More details on where we'll go next soon.

Truly sorry to hear about your troubles. Take it from me.. I've been
there.

You guys still going to cover the costs out of pocket? Take it from me
- hosting can be pretty pricey.

Possibly check out www.readyhosting.com we use them, and have never
had problems at all. Would be worth the visit to see if they could
possibly handle it. If you DO sign up, please list cinemaboxers.com as
a referral! LOL

I have a suggestion to save bandwidth, remove the scroll graphic and any
other non-essential graphics from the webpages. Additionally, just use a
Printer-friendly page, there isn't really a need to have a brown page and a
printer page, just put working links at the top of the printer page.

Just my 2 cents!

PS: thankfully I have already printed out a batch of places I want to

How about a little Paypal donation box on the website? I would be
happy to contribute and would still consider that it is your site to

Offline until the letterboxing community comes to the realization that
not all clues need to be stored in a large online database. Those
wishing to play the game differently have already made plans accordingly.

I'm not really sure what resources the letterboxing.org website went
over, but based on my experience with Atlas Quest, there's a lot more
at issue than just bandwidth. For me, running the queries that perform
the searches or look up message board posts and such take up far more
of their share of processing power, and I've been considering
upgrading my account. For the bandwidth itself, AQ uses less than 10%
of what's allotted to it.

Assuming LbNA is suffering from similar problems, it's not likely the
site is suffering from bandwidth issues but rather processing power to
run the queries.

Ryan is exactly correct. The problem was the database searches. Bandwidth and storage were not the issue. We'll need to upgrade to a higher level of service that can give us the database horsepower that we need as we continue to grow.

I know people who have had problems - mainly they boil down to Paypal
being reluctant and slow to fix problems. That said, the online group
of collectors I belong to has over a thousand members who use Paypal
a *lot* and I can't remember mention of more than a small handful of
problems over the past few years. It happens, but sometimes we hear a
few horror stories and take them to be widespread. How many companies
would be in business if everyone avoided them after someone reported
a bad problem? :-)

Ditto for me. I've been using paypal for a looooooooooong time now. I was
a victim of credit card theft from an online purchase I made when I gave the
company I ordered from my credit card number and expiration date. That was
no fun. Ended up with somebody in the UK subscribing to a bunch of
Singapore sex sites. But I've never had any problem with paypal, so paypal
is definitely preferred by me.

But on the other hand, my paypal account isn't "verified." In other words,
I use only a credit card with them. So if there *were* to be a problem, I
can challenge it thru my credit card company and don't have to rely on
paypal getting involved. Personally, I would never ever give paypal my bank
account numbers like they want for a "verified" account.
Nothankyouverymuch.

I've paid by Paypal on hundreds of occasions for my e-Bay (Vintonbuyer) without any problem at all. I sure the few problems that may occur will get all of the attention on the e-Bay boards.

Yep, same here. I'm not really a fan of the "new & improved" LbNA but I'd

Uh oh, the old art versus sport debate!
How about a little Paypal donation box on the website? I would be
happy to contribute and would still consider that it is your site to
run as you see fit.

well, i may have jumped when i heard paypal. my problems have been with returning things and not getting all my money back. paypal has a way of grabbing money from you and holding it so you have to use it with them. but with that said, i think there is a website that is dedicated to how much paypal sucks. i have heard stories about how bad they are. i have used paypal many times, but they say it only takes once, and now i am weary about using them, just incase i have problems. i will look for the website so everyone can see.

David,
Please expand on known problems with PayPal. I've used it twice

I love letterboxing but i'll never use paypal again. while doing
all my ebay business I had my paypal account stolen numerous times.
Even though it said everything was on a secure connection i still
had my information taken. i'm a trusting person and actually gave
paypal a second chance and it happened again. no more of that.

I just joined this list and I can not believe how much effort and energy is going into this thread on Paypal, which has nothing to do with letterboxing. Did I join the wrong list? Also, Please change your subject line. It should reflect the content of your email.

Hmmm. I've never had a problem getting money out from paypal. In fact,
I've alwyas found it quicker to get money out of paypal than into
paypal.

I had a paypal account for quite a while, but I kept getting
suspicious emails about my password being changed and purchases
being made. I was never charged for anything I didn't purchase, but
the emails made me very leary. I cancelled paypal and don't really
want to go there again.

don't start on paypal. I have been using paypal on my sites for years and have not had
one problem with them. If you had a problem its a rarity and unfortunate. Nothing is perfect in this
world.

i don't know that paypal should be involved. i have heard of some horror stories about them and i have been a victim myself. they go through ebay and it is not a favorite there too!

Yep, same here. I'm not really a fan of the "new & improved" LbNA but I'd
certainly contribute.

Uh oh, the old art versus sport debate!
How about a little Paypal donation box on the website? I would be
happy to contribute and would still consider that it is your site to
run as you see fit.

My husband gets those emails a lot, but he's never had a paypal
account associated with his email address.

Beware of anyone asking for passwords, or asking you to change a
password by using a link from their message. Don't click on just any
ol' link anyone sends you either -- know who sent it and where it is
supposed to take you first.

Yes - these are the phishing scams. I get them all the time from
various banks that I have never had any association, let alone ebay
or paypal emails. I have used Paypal about 150 times with zero
issues. I know there are people who have had issues (obviously by
the website that was shared), but have never experienced them myself
and pray that I never do.

The thing to remember is that they do not actually come from paypal
or the bank or whoever, but from someone trying to look like them to
scam you. Poor grammar and/or spelling are often a clue. Never click
on anything in one of these emails. If you have doubts and think it
might be real or are worried about your account, don't click on the
email, but type the relevant website directly into your browser - for
example, type paypal.com in and check your account there. If there
really is a problem, it will also be noted in your account somewhere.
If not, then you can rest easy, delete the email, and go on with your
day.

Just to bring this full-circle back to LBing, I think I'll have to
plant an LB inspired by this thread. Maybe I could even do my first
series if I find an appropriate planting place. :-)

I have usesd PayPal with no problems for a long time. I also have
received suspicious emails about a new name being added to my
account. Checking with PayPal, these were indeed phishing attempts.
I never open these but immediately delete them. Read PayPal's
security policy. They say they will always address you by name if
the email is from them. The phishing attempts do not use your name.
I have found this very helpful and continue to feel good about
PayPal. So easy, so convenient.

Dave and I have been Letterboxing for a few years now and are happy and
willing to support those who work behind the scenes and provide such a
useful service. We have decided to sponsor a month of a new home for
LBNA. It's been good to us and we want to give back a little bit. If
you go to Choi's Blog you can find other contact information.
